Find and use your Spiritual Gifts
Some people in our world are called ‘gifted people’. What people mean by that is that these people are especially good at something. Scientists and athletes and musicians and exceptional leaders of people. These are ‘gifted’ people because they stand out.
The New Testament says something a little different. Every single person who has followed Jesus is gifted. Through the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, God gives each of us gifts, and we are to discover and use them for His purposes and to build up His church in His mission in the world.

What are spiritual gifts?
The word in the New Testament most often used is best translated as ‘grace gifts’ – evidence of God’s grace in our lives, a bubbling up of His goodness in working through ordinary people to achieve His own spiritual work. That means they are not something to boast about, or to hide away trying to be modest. It’s not about us anyway, so we should humbly and cheerfully use the gifts God has given us wherever we can.
How do I discover mine?
In order to use our spiritual gifts, we need first to determine what they are, what it is that God is working in and through us. There are three ways we recommend doing this:
- Pray about it. Ask God to show you, and then see if you have a sense of what He is leading you in.
- Speak with someone. Talk to someone who knows you well, who might be able to say what they see in you.
- Use a spiritual gift survey. The New Testament gives a few lists of different spiritual gifts.
